Charges chasing Rouhani: the last to know in Iran

Rouhani has fewer powers than that of Supreme Leader Khamenei

The Iranian President, Hassan Rouhani, is trying to defend himself against the accusations against him, and says he is the last to know about the critical developments in Iran in recent days.

Last week, Iranian politicians and citizens accused Rouhani of not knowing the real reason behind the crash of the Ukrainian plane near the capital, Tehran.

On Thursday, the Iranian president said during a meeting in the capital, Tehran, that he was working daily to prevent a war or a military confrontation with the United States.

He added that, being an official of the country's Supreme National Security Council, he could not speak about everything.

He rewrote this speech on Twitter, but criticism poured in on him, and the tweeters reminded him of his earlier words that he was the last to know some of the state’s affairs.

A spokesman for the National Security and Foreign Policy Commission in Iran criticized Ali Khushrodi, Rouhani, and said that according to the law the council should be informed about such matters (downing the plane) and must make decisions on it.

Rouhani was subjected to severe criticism last November, after he learned of the decision to raise fuel prices from state television, just as ordinary citizens on the street.

Theoretically, Rouhani is the head of the executive branch, with the exception of the powers allocated to the regime’s guide, which are broad. The guide announces war and peace, while the Revolutionary Guard follows him, not the government.

Rouhani government officials spoke with the news of the plane crashing that the matter was caused by a technical defect, and then they said after the world questioned this narration that "there is a psychological war on Iran."

In the end, after days of denial, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani admitted in a tweet, "The internal investigation of the armed forces concluded that unfortunately missiles were fired in error that led to the crash of the Ukrainian plane."
