The police denied firing on protesters

Video clips posted on social media showed that Iranian protesters were gunned down, after Tehran admitted to accidentally shooting down a passenger plane.

It was not immediately possible to verify the authenticity of the footage, released late on Sunday evening, and it also showed blood marks on the ground and pictures of people who appeared to be security personnel in other parts of the area with guns.

Other publications showed Iranian police in riot gear hitting protesters with sticks on the street, while people shouting at a close-up, saying, "Don't beat them."

But official media outlets quoted Tehran police chief Hussain Rahimi, denying that the protesters had been shot, and the senior security official said, "The police have orders for restraint."

"After successive national shocks in a short period of time, individuals must be allowed to grieve safely and demand accountability. Iranians should not risk their lives to exercise their constitutional right to peaceful assembly," said Hadi Ghaimi, executive director of the New York-based Center for Human Rights in Iran.

The Revolutionary Guards patrolled the city on motorbikes, and security personnel attended civilian clothes at full force.

Tehran and other cities witnessed protest demonstrations after the Iranian authorities recognized their responsibility for shooting down the Ukrainian plane after taking off from Khomeini International Airport in the capital, killing 176 passengers, most of them Iranians.

The incident sparked international outrage, noting that it occurred while Iran was targeting missiles with American forces in Iraq.

Several countries called for an independent investigation to be opened and for those responsible to be identified. Ukraine also stressed the need for Iran to pay compensation to the families of the victims.
