The new Lebanese government .. names and quotas

From the right Diab, Aoun, and Berri

The Prime Minister-designate in Hassan Diab announced, on Tuesday evening, the composition of his government consisting of 20 ministerial portfolios. What is the form of this government?

The announcement of the new Lebanese government came after more than a month of stalled negotiations, amid continuing popular demonstrations, rejecting the principle of quotas in the government.

The Secretary-General of the Lebanese Cabinet, Mahmoud Makiya, has announced 3 decrees, which are accepting the resignation of the Saad Hariri government, announcing the formation of the new government, and naming Hassan Diab as head of the Lebanese government.

Women and affiliated with parties

The new Lebanese government consists of 20 ministerial portfolios, 6 of which are held by women, which is the largest number of female participation in the history of Lebanese governments.

Women occupy six ministries: the defense, the media, the displaced, work and justice, and the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

None of the new ministers has assumed political responsibilities before, and there are no deputies in the cabinet, but most ministers are affiliated with large political parties, which runs counter to the demands of the rising street.

The shares of ministerial portfolios

The ministerial portfolios were divided in the new government according to the following system:

From the prime minister’s share: the Ministries of Interior, Education and Communications and the Ministry of Administrative Development and the Environment.

From the share of the President of the Republic and the Free Patriotic Movement, headed by Gebran Bassil, the ministries: defense, foreign affairs, justice, energy, the displaced, and the economy.

It is Hezbollah’s share, the health and industry ministries, and the Amal movement’s choice, and the finance and agriculture ministries.
With regard to the ministers who assume sovereign portfolios:

Minister of Defense and Deputy Prime Minister: Zeina Akar Adra, holds a Bachelor's degree in Social Sciences, Marketing and Management, and is the Executive Director of the International Information Foundation.

Nassif Hatti will take over the Foreign Ministry, and was previously heading the Arab League mission to Italy and the Vatican.

As for the Ministry of Interior, it will be handled by the retired Brigadier General in the Lebanese Army, Mohamed Fahmy.

The Minister of Justice, Marie-Claude Negm, is Professor of Law and Political Science.

And the Minister of Finance: Ghazi Wazani, holds a PhD in economic and financial performance.

The street is protesting

Meanwhile, the Lebanese street recorded its rejection of those who describe it as the one-color government and quotas.

Protesters gathered in front of Al-Nijmeh Square leading to the Lebanese Parliament in downtown Beirut and in a number of areas in and outside the Lebanese capital, refusing to form the government they see came on the principle of partisan quotas.

Demonstrators gathered on the famous Ring Bridge, which had witnessed massive protests before.

Protesters also gathered in Al-Nour Square in Tripoli and in the Bekaa.
