Sistani criticizes the strangers and violating the sovereignty of Iraq

Sistani condemns the confrontation between America and Iran on Iraqi soil

On Friday, the supreme Shiite authority in Iraq, Ali Sistani, condemned the recent attacks targeting Iraqi territory, during the escalation of tension between Tehran and Washington.

In the Friday sermon, Sistani called on the Iraqi authority to rise to the level of responsibility in the country.

He added, "The serious attacks and repeated violations of Iraqi sovereignty that occurred in the last days with apparent weakness of the authorities concerned in protecting the country and its people from these attacks and violations."

The supreme Shiite authority emphasized that what is required "is for Iraq to be a master of its own, ruled by its own children, and no role for strangers in its decisions."

On Thursday, the Iraqi Foreign Ministry announced, in a statement, that it had summoned the Iranian ambassador to inform him of Iraq's refusal to hit military bases on its soil and that he considered the measure a violation of its sovereignty.

The statement called on all parties to show restraint and stressed the independence of Iraq.

The statement added that the summons of the Iranian official comes in the context of the retaliatory missile strikes launched by Tehran, on Wednesday, on the base of Ein al-Assad, which includes American forces.

And Tehran launched, on Wednesday dawn, a ballistic missile attack on two bases where the American army and the international coalition forces are stationed in Iraq, in retaliation for the killing of the Iranian general, Qassem Soleimani.
