China: fourth person dies in new coronavirus

A fourth person died of pneumonia in the central city of Wuhan after the emergence of a new strain of the Coronavirus.

The Wuhan Health Committee said in a statement that the 89-year-old man had symptoms of the disease on January 13 and was taken to hospital five days later after suffering from severe breathing difficulties.

In a separate statement, the committee stated that 15 city health workers were infected with pneumonia, noting that one of them was in critical condition.

The disease appeared in Wuhan and spread to several other cities, including the capital Beijing and Shanghai, and it was announced that four cases had been detected outside the borders of China in South Korea, Thailand and Japan.


State television said that the authorities had confirmed 217 cases overall, as of Monday evening, of which 198 were in Wuhan.
